What if 'Pride and Prejudice' met 'Persuasion'?

Have you ever wondered what might have happened if, on a rebound after Hunsford, Darcy came across someone who is very like him in temperament and manner?

Or if the dashing Captain Wentworth came home from the high seas to settle down and did not encounter the cheerful and scatter-brained Louisa Musgrove, but someone else, who has cheerfulness aplenty, but also sparkling wit, intelligence and charm – someone like, say, Elizabeth Bennet?

I have often wondered – and I have always found that, after ‘Pride and Prejudice’, ‘Persuasion’ is Jane Austen’s second most romantic novel, and it was very tempting to bring the two together!

‘The Subsequent Proposal’ does exactly that. It brings together characters who are very much alike, at a time of upheaval in their lives, when they should have known better than making life-altering decisions on the heels of heartache and disappointment!

If you’d like to see what might have happened, visit at Amazon next week and take a peek! I’ll say no more for now – other than reassure you that I am a firm believer in the fact that, no matter what crazy obstacles are dreamed up and heartlessly set before them, Elizabeth and Darcy should never be apart!

'The Subsequent Proposal' is now available in ebook format at Amazon and Smashwords, with paperback soon to follow.

Persuasion and P&P frequently vie with each other for being my favourite book. Though this sounds like there is heartbreak aplenty involved, it also sounds brilliant!

Well done on the impending new release!

My favorite austen novels are also P&P and P, followed by Emma. I'm just starting to get the hang of austenesque novels, and so far I love most of the novels. Before reading this novel, which I'll do, I'd like to know if maybe too much mix and match reduces the romantic idea of the couples we all have in mind? Even when Lizzy ends up with Darcy and Anne with Wentworth, maybe seeing Frederick having a crush on Lizzy changes our ideas of how perfectly the original couples are matched.

Hi and thanks so much for your comment!

I understand your concern completely, it would seem horribly disloyal if any of the traditional Austen heroes start having a crush on anybody other than the right lady!

I hope you won't be disappointed though and that you won't feel I've taken the angst and the wrong courtship too far.

In my story, Capt Wentworth is a lot less demonstrative towards Elizabeth than he was towards Louisa Musgrove in the original - and virtually none of it happens under Anne's eyes, unlike in the real 'Persuasion', which BTW is something I personally couldn't quite forgive the original Austen character for :)

His is protective instincts towards Elizabeth and the Bennet family in general are the main (perhaps only) indication of his honourable intentions, but none of this happens under Anne's eyes - just Darcy's. Once Anne reappears on the scene moreover, it becomes quite clear that Capt Wentworth's first allegiance is to Anne's comfort, even though she is considered lost to him.

Hope that might reassure you and I do hope you won't be disappointed. I also hope I answered your question but if not I'd love to carry on in more detail. Thanks again for your comment and I'm looking forward to hearing what you thought of 'The Subsequent proposal'!

All the best,

Joana
